ES RAFAL DE SON MACIÀ
An Architecture Rooted in the Land
The project proposes a 336.20 m² detached single-family residence, associated with an agricultural holding and located on a steep rural plot in the Llevant region of Mallorca. The house is positioned on the highest and most favourable part of the terrain, partially integrating into the topography to reduce its visual presence and establish a natural and serene relationship with the landscape.
The residence is divided into four interconnected volumes, slightly offset from one another to follow the contours of the terrain and adapt to its slope. This arrangement avoids an excessively longitudinal presence, allowing the architecture to blend into its surroundings. Each volume accommodates a different use and is connected through courtyards, terraces and outdoor spaces that multiply perspectives, enhance the entry of natural light and encourage continuous cross ventilation.
The pitched roofs covered with traditional Arabic tiles, the stone characteristic of the Llevant region of Mallorca, and the timber frames create an architectural identity deeply rooted in its surroundings. Partially sunken courtyards create small retreats of light and shade, generating different atmospheres and microclimates throughout the day, while the arrangement of the volumes opens the residence towards the sea and the interior landscape of the estate.
The house also incorporates energy self-sufficiency solutions through photovoltaic and solar thermal collectors. Architecture, topography, materiality and landscape are therefore understood as parts of a single proposal, conceived to inhabit the place with respect and naturalness.
